Communication and collaboration are an important part of any learning experience. In this context, web conferencing is any application that you can use to communicate through voice, video, and text-based discussion. It also includesthe ability to collaborate with others on documents via the Internet.

Adobe Connect

Adobe Connect is a web browser-based desktop video conferencing and file sharing site that allows users to meet, share, and collaborate at a distance from their desktops. One of the key advantages of this system is that it demands very little of end-users: only an internet connection, a standard web browser, and a free Adobe plug-ins are required to participate in Adobe Connect meetings.

Several NIU Colleges and Departments have been using Adobe Connect for online teaching, faculty meetings, student recruitment, doctoral dissertation meetings, grant writing meetings, and even tutoring. It is important to note the difference between Adobe Connect and Blackboard Collaborate in that faculty and staff do not need to have a Blackboard course in order to host a meeting with Adobe Connect. Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that is available for all credit courses within NIU's Blackboard portal. Blackboard Collaborate has some of the same capabilities as Adobe Connect with two major differences. First, Blackboard Collaborate requires a Blackboard course shell, and second attendees must download and install Java.

Chat is a form of synchronous communication that takes place between one or more people on the Internet through text and symbols. eLearning can provide you with a web-based chat tool to use on your website.
