Title: Leaking Drum Simulation
Client: Dennis Cesarotti
Year: 2006
Challenge.
NIU’s Hazardous Response and Incident Control course (TECH 497) exposes students to the issues first responders face and the resources they use when confronted with a chemical spill emergency. As part of the class, students needed to be provided with an opportunity to apply lessons learned to a real chemical spill emergency so they could better appreciate the impact of first responders’ decisions and the difficult task they face.
Solution.
A Flash-based simulation was developed where students assume the role of a first responder and are presented with a chemical spill emergency. As the simulation progresses, the consequences of each decision are revealed and incorrect decisions may even result in termination of the simulation. An online journal lets students explain their thought process for each decision, and upon completion of the simulation, this journal is emailed to the professor.
